On Aug. 22, a delegation from the American Lighting Association
met with several representatives of the
Product Care Association – a non-profit
that manages product stewardship programs in Canada – to discuss how the
British Columbia recycling program
impacts the lighting industry.
The delegation from ALA included
Norm Brown, CLC, Norburn Lighting
& Bath Centre; Mike Demuynck,
Excel Lighting & Mfg. Ltd.; Finn
Finnigan, McLaren Lighting; Sub
Ketchen, The Lighting Warehouse;
Brett Robinson, LS, Robinson
Lighting; and Dick Upton, ALA.
The Product Care staff members
who participated in the meeting at
the association’s office in Vancouver
included Jordan Best, senior program
coordinator; Mannie Cheun, director of
technology; and Mary Hanlon, program
coordinator.
“At the meeting in Vancouver, we
discussed how the British Columbia
recycling program affects the lighting
industry,” says Upton, ALA president/
CEO. “Our objectives were to under-
stand their current fee structure, which
is difficult and expensive to administer;
build a positive and open relationship
with Product Care; find an alternative
fee structure; and ensure the industry
has a voice going forward. As they look
at going forward with similar programs
in other provinces, we want to ensure
that we have a seat at the table.”
The British Columbia Recycling
Regulation requires that the “producers”
– including retailers, distributors and
manufacturers – of all lamps, ballasts
and fixtures sold in British Columbia
be part of an approved stewardship
program. As a result, all companies that
sell lighting fixtures and ceiling fans with
light kits in British Columbia will be
