ALA Mobilizes Industry Momentum
with New, Expanded Programs
The ALA will intro- duce several new
initiatives and expand
others in 2014 as part
of its goal to provide
value to its members
and strengthen their
bottom lines. The objectives were approved
by the ALA Board of
Governors Executive
Committee in November
2013 and are outlined in
the 2014 Action Agenda,
mailed to members in December 2013.
New initiatives being introduced in
2014:

Program
▶ Promote the value of
the showroom distribution channel to consumers and interior designers
▶ Distribute 300,000
Lighting magazines
through member showrooms and on newsstands

Last-Minute
Changes in Title
24 Adoption of
LED Fixtures in
California
The latest revision of California’s Title 24 legislation goes into effect
on January 1, 2014; but last-minute
changes in the LED fixture specifications are causing cost, availability and
specification problems for ALA fixture
manufacturers.
According to Terry McGowan, ALA
director of engineering and technology,
the problems affect permanently wired
LED fixtures used in new constsruc-tion and remodeling, which manufacturers want to classify as high efficacy
to meet the requirements of Title 24.
“Both Dick Upton and I have been
hearing from manufacturers about the
way the requirements were finalized
and published during August and
September,” said McGowan. “Color
performance, color tolerance, and LED
output/watt were affected and those, of
course, impact fixture manufacturing
costs,” said McGowan. “Manufacturers
are reporting that their costs are higher
by 10-20 percent and that there will
be significant time delays while modi-
fied LED light engine assemblies are
redesigned, tested and certified for the
California market.”
Dick Upton stated that he, Clark
Linstone and McGowan are schedul-
ing an in-person meeting with the
California Energy Commission during
the next few weeks to review the issues,
especially since the initial proposals for
the next cycle of Title 24 revisions will
be getting underway yet this year.
