ALA’s Washington D.C. Mission
Focuses on Key Industry Issues
The Washington Mission, held April 1- 3, focused on several key issues,
including Internet sales tax, potential
ceiling fan and ceiling fan light kit
regulations, ENERGY STAR third-party testing, and developing domestic
energy supplies.
ALA members and staff attended
appointments with 15 members of
Congress and their staff, and met with
the Department of Energy (DOE) and
Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA).
Additionally, Lutron Electronics
hosted a reception in their WDC

The ALA Conference committee has lined up an impressive array
of speakers for Nashville, Sept. 14-16.
Headlining the conference are the keynoters, noted below.
Steve Mulvany—Key Note

Mulvany is the
president and founder
of Management Tools
Inc., which works
on a long-term basis
with companies
throughout the United
States, Canada and
Australia implementing strategies to
improve management and service
quality practices that impact company
performance and customers’ perceptions. He also facilitates long-range
strategic and operational planning
sessions for medium and large companies. Mulvany is one of the highest
rated speakers on the topics of quality
service, productivity and strategic
planning. He has spoken worldwide to
the Young Presidents’ Organization,
the Department of Defense, numerous
trade organizations, and many corporations, including Steven Spielberg’s
Amblin Entertainment.

Justin Neumann hired for VP of
Government Affairs Role
ALA announced the hiring of Justin E. Neumann as
the vice president of government affairs on March 19.
Prior to coming to ALA,
Neumann was the director
of government relations
with the National Electrical
Manufacturers Association
(NEMA). He is a graduate
of Brigham Young University with a
degree in Political Science.
While at NEMA, he gained significant experience with lighting issues.
Neumann also worked at the Consumer
Healthcare Products Association
as manager, Federal Government
Relations, and Zions Bank as special
assistant to the president and CEO.
ALA staff members
partnered with Neumann
throughout the last few
years. ALA President and
CEO Richard D. Upton said,
“We are high on Neumann’s
collaborative style, knowl-
edge of the issues and work
ethic. He is bright, engaging
and brings great enthusiasm
to ALA in his new responsibilities.”
Neumann began in April, which
allows over eight months to become
familiar with the issues in which ALA
is engaged before Upton’s retirement
