ALA hosts
Workshop to
Address DOe’s
Ceiling Fan
Rulemaking
Top-Rated speakers Return to
Conference for Repeat Performance
The American Lighting Association hosted a workshop for ceiling-fan manufacturers on April 10-11 in
Dallas to prepare a unified industry
response to the U.S. Department of
Energy’s Energy Conservation Standards
Rulemaking Framework Document for
Ceiling Fans and Ceiling Fan Light Kits,
released in March.
The 100-page document details the
“analytical approach and scope of coverage
for the rulemaking” and identifies 75 issues “on which DOE is particularly interested in receiving comment.” The DOE’s
deadline to receive written comments
regarding the document was April 29.
“One of the challenges was the very
large and broad scope of the work outlined
in the framework document,” says Dick
Upton, CCE, ALA president and CEO.
“Included in the document were key issues
that required significant time to research
and prepare a response. All of them could
have significant impact on the industry.”
To prepare a unified industry
response to the DOE framework docu-
ment, the ALA organized a workshop
with ceiling-fan manufacturers to de-
velop a comprehensive reply. Workshop
participants included:
▶ Nathan Frampton, LS, president,
Fanimation
▶ Tom Frampton, founder and CEO,
Fanimation
▶ David Gatto, manager–customer
relations, Westinghouse Lighting
Corporation
▶ Terry McGowan, FIES, LC, director
of engineering/technology, American
Lighting Association
▶ John Moody, director–product man-
agement–ceiling fans, Kichler Lighting

Reinventing Success
For the Monday morning general session, Jon Schallert will present Business
Reinvention: The New Normal for Every
Business, in which
he will discuss
how business
reinvention is
critical for both
large corporations
and small business survival.
“In my keynote
presentation, I
will discuss how
businesses can
come out stronger and more profitable
than ever before through their reinven-
tion,” Schallert says. “Attendees will hear
inspiring stories of business owners who
decided to ‘play a bigger game,’ and who
took their companies from local busi-
nesses to regional powerhouses.”
During this session, attendees will
learn why a business makeover is critical
for small business survival and the most
profitable strategy for any entrepreneur
today – even though most businesses will
never willingly go through business rein-
vention on their own. Schallert will also
present a breakout session entitled So You

Association’s Lighting
Hall of Fame on Sept. 24
at the 2013 ALA Annual
